The Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, disability, familial status, and national origin. It covers buyers or renters of private housing and government financed or subsidized housing.
Owners of housing facilities are required to make reasonable exceptions in their policies and operations to afford people with disabilities equal housing opportunities. Landlords must allow tenants with disabilities to make reasonable accessrelated modifications to their private living space, as well as to common use area.
(The modifications are usually at the tenant's expense.)
Complaints of Fair Housing Act violations may be filed with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). For assistance, call the Fair Housing Information Clearinghouse toll-free: 1-800-343-3442 (voice) 1-800-483-2209 (tdd/tty)
